If you were in any doubt that modern technology can mesh with ancient traditions, Athan is the answer.

The software carries out a straightforward task in an effective and efficient manner. The user simply inputs their location (choosing from six million cities and towns worldwide) and the application then calculates the correct times for the five daily calls to prayer, which are based on sunset and sunrise times.

At the appropriate times, the software then plays audio of the Athan, or call to prayer, in the same way the user would hear if near or in a mosque. A particularly neat touch is that the software also looks at the user's location and figures out the Qiblah: the correct way to point so the user can face Mecca as required during the prayers.

The software includes a wide range of prayers and also allows the user to choose different voices reciting the call to prayer at different times of day. For users who will be away from their computer, the software can also print out upcoming prayer times as far as a month in advance. There is also a handy converter for switching dates between the Hijri and Gregorian calendars. It's not a beautiful looking interface, but is effective and simple to use.

Con's: May feel a little clinical for some users

Working with computers is what I do, all day, every day. Most of you who frequent Soft32 know that. I know I probably mention it way too much. However, when you work with computers as much as I do, you often find yourself with many different needs, many different reasons to get to one or another PC on a local or distant network. For that, you need Ammyy Admin. It’s a remote control app for Windows.

Remote desktop software allows you to take control of a desktop PC. Ammyy Admin does just that; and its kinda cool. Conclusion: Ammyy Admin is a really easy to use, important piece of software. Controlling a PC that you don't have physical access to can be a huge plus and advantage, especially if you have to provide some kind of support or advice to users who need your help. For me, apps like this can make or break my ability help friends and family as well as do my job.

The biggest thing here, is that the app doesn't require any installation in order to be used. Put it on your PC and go. That's it. You get a secure, fast, easy way to control a remote PC that can easily get past NAT and firewalls. It also has built in voice chat and a file manager that will allow you to grab files and talk to friends and family as you try to give them a hand.

Ammyy Admin offers a great deal and the price is more than right. Plainly put, the app is a winner.

The free calls over the internet became more and more popular. And while there are plenty of programs that allows you to do so, it's quite hard to choose. But of course, you go for the most featured and light program that you can find. That's what I like the most about Viber.

First of all, it's all cross platform. I know, it's not the only one who has multiple platform support, but its features are making Viber a complete fast and free communication app. It's fast, because it's light, simple and efficient. While other programs offer you this and that function, Viber developers managed to get most of the features, well, the most useful ones, into one program. So, you have high quality voice calls, free text (even group text), photo messages and location-sharing with Viber users. Nothing of these requires registration. The application will detect automatically your contacts who are using Viber, and is working great on 3G connection or wifi without major differences. Anyway, be careful because the usage of 3G will use your data plan and can generate extra costs.

As I mentioned before, it's a cross platform software. So, except for linux, you can have Viber on almost any device using Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Nokia (Symbian) and Samsung Bada. 

I was testing the Windows and Android versions. Well, I wanted to check the Video Call feature, which so far is a beta feature, between these platforms. On Windows I have the feature, marked as beta, but on Android is not. So, I can make a voice call between these platforms, but so far, the Video call feature doesn't seem to be available on the mobile device. Location sharing is also a bit tricky. You only have a small purple arrow that will share your location with the person you are texting, if you activate the arrow. You can open the location in Maps, and let your GPS guide you to meet. Available on mobile device only.

Conclusion: Let’s face it, emailing isn’t exactly the most exciting thing on earth. That’s probably why the creative features in IncrediMail can be so much fun. It really is a blast adding animations and 3D effects into your emails, while the custom background maker can produce some really great personalised email templates. Be warned though, while IncrediMail should be commended for creating a capable and safe emailing system, there have been some issues recorded with backing up archives.

Because IncrediMail is freeware, unless you’re willing to pay for an upgrade there are some pretty noticeable drawbacks; your outgoing emails will contain advertisements in them and your browser and homepage will be hijacked by IncrediMail graphics. For casual users, these might not be such a big deal, but anyone wanting to send official or business related emails won’t be able to compromise. Still, if that’s the case, you probably won’t be using IncrediMail in the first place.
